All the dog days of summer, training camp, 17 weeks of the regular season plus three playoff rounds and we are finally here – at Super Bowl XLV (45). For the Pittsburgh Steelers, they are going for record Super Bowl win #7. The Green Bay Packers, the trophy is named after their Legendary Head Coach, Vince Lombardi, who guided the Packers to Super Bowl titles the first two years and no franchise is perhaps more decorated in NFL history than them.
It’s a classic, old-school matchup. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger tries to join Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw as the only QB’s ever to win three Super Bowl titles. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers is hotter than any other quarterback in the sport right now. Pittsburgh has a mighty fine defense led by Defensive Player of the Year Troy Polamalu at safety as well as supreme pass rusher James Harrison. Green Bay’s defense has a fierce linebacker in Clay Matthews that’s emerging as one of the league’s top defenders, and a veteran corner in Charles Woodson that is among the sport’s finest at his position.
These are two tough defenses that were as good as any in football this year, each offense has shown explosive capabilities without strong, consistent running games and both franchises have history and prestige to fall back on, making for an intriguing matchup any way you size things up.
In the preseason I had Green Bay losing to Baltimore in the Super Bowl… since the Ravens aren’t here and their arch nemesis is instead, I’ll go with the Pack. Green Bay’s defense to me is the underrated storyline here with so much attention on Rodgers and Roethlisberger , plus the Pitt defense. The Packers have shown tremendous growth on that side of the ball in year two in Dom Capers’ scheme on defense after getting torched a year ago in a playoff loss in overtime at Arizona. I see the Packers’ D’ being the difference, containing Big Ben.
